January 6th is Epiphany Day which is a celebration of the baptism of Christ in the Greek Orthodox church. Epiphany is the day when Greek Cypriots believe that the mischievous ‘Kalikantzaroi’ or goblins that annoy Christians through the festive season can be banished by the making of loukoumades. Loukoumades are honey/syrup soaked donuts that are made and covered in crushed nuts or cinnamon sugar. The kallikantzaroi live underground and come to the surface during Christmas time. #🇨🇾 Loukoumades are traditionally made to ward off the Kallikantzaroi (mischievous goblins) that live underground. According to Greek folklore, the Kallikantzaroi live underground and come to the surface during the 12 days of Christmas until Epiphany (January 6th). On Epiphany Day, loukoumades or ‘kserotiana’ are made and thrown on the roofs of houses so that the Kallikantzaroi eat them and leave. During this time, Greek priests go through all the houses to bless them with holy water. In Cyprus, on this day people go to church, receive holy water, drink it, and sprinkle their homes for good luck. Children sing the Epiphany carols, starting with the well-known line “Good morning and Epiphany…”, and receive money. On the eve of Epiphany, households make loukoumades, but before eating them they scatter a few on the roof of the house, so the skalapountaroi (goblins) will eat and leave. If you’re in Nicosia, you can find great traditional loukoumades at Kirrilis in Lakatamia. Happy Epiphany, and happy new year!
