About Today! #🇨🇾 #♥️ · · · The Orthodox calendar today celebrates "Tsiknopempti" the day when people get to enjoy as much meat possible before Lent starts. The name translates to "smelly Thursday", as the smell from all the meat cooking on the charcoal spreads everywhere! It's the day where carnivores rejoice 😂 I made these souvlakia using pork neck. Cooked them under the oven grill at 220°C for about 10min on either side. I did not marinate them beforehand just simply massaged a bit of olive oil on them. 🥗 This "souvlaki" quinoa bowl tastes like chicken but is completely plant based! We made this super tasty and healthy recipe using the Chick*n strips from @themightykitchen , made for those who want a meat-free dish but still want to have that chicken taste! 📅 If you want to try this out yourself, this Saturday the 25th of February, @foodhaus.cy stores will be giving out one free pack of the Mighty Chick*N Strips for every customer (1 free pack per receipt, until stocks lasts). This is the perfect opportunity to try out this delicious recipe! Don't miss it! Recipe: (Serves 2) 1 box Mighty Kitchen Chick*n Strips 4-5 Ardo Grilled Peppers 1 cup foodhaus quinoa 1 cucumber cut in small cubes 10 cherry tomatoes cut in half 1/2 red onion cut in small pieces 1 teaspoon Epic Souvlaki seasoning 2 tablespoons olive oil For the dressing: 3 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar Maldon sea salt 1/2 teaspoon Epic Souvlaki seasoning Heat one tablespoon of olive oil and add the chick*n strips along with one teaspoon of souvlaki seasoning. Cook over medium-high heat for approximately 3 minutes on each side. Remove the chick*n from the pan and add 4-5 grilled peppers, cooking until soft and tender. Cook the quinoa according to the instructions and assemble the bowl with all the vegetables, grilled peppers cut in small pieces, quinoa and chick*n strips. Tsiknopempti (Τσικνοπέμπτη in Greek) is the celebration of the Orthodox tradition in which great quantities of meat are consumed. Tsikna means the smell of grilled meat and Pempti means Thursday (Πέμπτη in Greek). This day is also called Charred, Fat ,Smoky or Barbeque Thursday due to the large amount of meat that is cooked all over Cyprus. This day signals the last week that the Greek Orthodox members are allowed to eat meat before the fasting period of Lent. It is therefore celebrated 11 days before Green Monday. It takes place on a Thursday due to the fact that Wednesday and Friday are considered to be fasting days of the second week of the Apokria (which means away from meat). Barbeques are set up all over the island, where restaurants, taverns and even the streets are filled with the smells of grilled meat. Restaurants are overcrowded with people and in many cases live music is performed for this occasion, therefore reservations are definitely necessary on this day.
