Making mulled wine at home is easier than you think! To make this recipe we used a local Cypriot wine with a Geographical Indication from Limassol, which emphasizes the relationship between the region and the product and the unique characteristics, reputation and quality attributable to its geographical origin. For a product to be granted a PGI, at least one of the stages of production, processing or preparation takes place in the region. In the case of wine, this means that at least 85% of the grapes used have to come exclusively from the geographical area where the wine is actually made. The EU quality schemes (Protected designation of origin (PDO), Protected geographical indication (PGI) and Geographical indication of spirit drinks (GI)) aim to protect the names of specific products to promote their unique characteristics, linked to their geographical origin as well as traditional know-how. Through the EU quality schemes, the Common Agricultural Policy enables producers to promote their products that present various specialized characteristics, achieving better prices in the market and thus improving their income, as well as consumers to purchase quality products, with guarantees for their production, processing and geographical origin. To make this mulled wine at home you’ll need the following ingredients: 1 bottle (750 ml) red dry wine 1 large orange 5 cloves 2 cinnamon sticks 2 star anise 1/4 cup honey 1/4 cup brandy In a pot add the wine, brandy and honey. Cut half an orange into slices. On one slice add the cloves so it’s easier to remove them later and add the slices to the wine, squeezing a bit of the juice in as well. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise and boil on low heat for 20-30 minutes.
